A little about me...

Hello, my name is Stephen East and I am a fully accredited Cognitive Behavioural Therapist and EMDR practitioner with over eleven years experience in helping people overcome psychological problems. I have worked in many settings including Primary Care, Secondary Care, Luxury Rehabilitation Centres, and as an online therapist over the past two years. I am also a clinical supervisor and guest lecturer for Teesside University. This means that I train and supervise trainee CBT therapists in a professional capacity and enjoy passing on my knowledge and experiences to them.

I have many specialist interests after having worked in many diverse settings. These include but are not limited to: Panic Disorder, PTSD, OCD, Health Anxiety, Addictions, Trauma, Depression, Insomnia, Low Self Esteem, Anger and Generalised Anxiety Disorder. As a CBT therapist I help the client to identify unhelpful thinking and patterns of behaviour.  Once these are recognised we work together to learn to challenge our thinking and find alternative balanced thoughts.  Similarly we identify more helpful behaviours that are congruent with a person's values and goals and try these out experimentally to lead to positive adaptive behaviour change. I also may bring in work to help tolerate difficult emotions and encourage self compassion. My style helps clients to rediscover direction in life and build self esteem, which are two things often found to be lacking when someone is experiencing psychological distress.

For trauma focused work I would usually use EMDR as it is NICE recommended and very effective for reducing symptoms associated with trauma and PTSD. EMDR is a form of therapy that uses eye movements to process traumatic memories allowing the person to move past the emotional distress linked to them. I have used this method very effectively working with addictions using the State-Feeling Protocol which helps people break the connection between the feeling they are seeking and the addictive behaviour they find themselves repeating.
